Is Social Media the new family pet?

Social Media Pet

I recently got a pet for my daughter (called Happy) and looked up some good advice on how to take care of the new family pet.  While reading them I realised that they are the same guidelines for taking on Social Media.

1. Before you adopt a pet, talk to family members about what they want. Same for social media, what do you want to get out if it?

2. If you're getting a pet for your children, don't expect the kiddies to do all the work.  Social Media is like a pet you need to be committed and have a strategy about it.

3. Make sure your family is ready for the changes a new pet will bring.  This goes the same for social media you have to be ready to engage and be more open.  Expect that you will find conversions about you and your company that could be positive or negative.

4. Do a little research to learn which breed matches your family's lifestyle.  The list is endless these days of social media networks, what one works best for you

5. Confirm whether anyone in your family suffers from allergies.  Does anyone is your business or family have any hesitations about social media.  They could have some previous negative experiences.

6. Teach your family and kids about pet parenting.  This is about social responsibility when engaging in social media.  We have all seen the damage done from You tube clips of pizza men etc.

7. Know that some animals and young children may not play well together.  Some social networks are not for everyone.  Maybe at first stick to the general social media networks such as Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter

8. Make sure a pet suits your home and lifestyle.  I suppose there are some businesses or families that social media might not be a perfect fit.  Trying to think of some.....

9. Stock up on supplies, food and toys before you bring a pet home. Make sure you have the internet!

10. Create a schedule to share responsibility for caring for your pet.  This is true, social media is just not for Christmas, engage and keep engaging.
