 Facebook for Business

Many of the people I've spoken to recently feel that Facebook isn't for business. I've come to the realization this is the case due to two factors.

One, people haven't come to terms with the fact that we have come to the end of an era; the end of outbound marketing and the beginning of a new way of engaging with prospective buyers.

The other is the perception of Facebook and what it's really out there for.  Most people feel that Facebook is a personal social networking site where you can engage with friends, share pictures, and let the world know about you.

In an article written by Dan Zarella on Facebook, People Have Profiles, Brands Have Pages, A new Business.com study showed that over 83% of businesses named Facebook as their favorite social networking site.  Here are three key facts you need to know about Facebook:

Profiles Are For People - social networking profiles represent people.

Groups Are For People - This is for like-minded people to communicate outside their immediate network.

Pages Are For Brands - Your brand is not a person. Brands have fans. Fans have discussions about your brand, share news about them, and share information about your brand for others.  It gives businesses the opportunity to communicate with their consumers, prospects, and employees.

So there you have it. Facebook isn't just for personal social networking it's for your business as well!

Hi

I think mainly because Facebook was orginally set-up as a social interactive/network site that I felt took the place of Friends Re-united. I guess its about adapting and until FB develop a specific site that's more geared and trusted amongst professional networking, then this will be a common view Yvette

If you need any persuading that Facebook can be immensely powerful for business, just take a look at this example showing how IKEA uses it. I'm just speechless with admiration. http://bit.ly/6MCWUL Any unbeliever should stand by for conversion or just face the fact that they're a Luddite.

Thank you very much. It's good to come across another person in Ireland that rates Dan Zarrella.

When I started to read I thought you were going to say that Facebook wasn't good for business.

About 90% of the businesses I meet in Ireland have no idea how Facebook can be used for business. Which offers a huge opportunity for those of who who know how the world has changed.

I'm grappling with the issue of whether Blog & Twitter & LinkedIn would be enough for my business? Whether we could do without Facebook?

Most of all I'm delighted to find Christine Gupta and her impressive blog. I thank her for the IKEA piece which is new to me.

Incidentally Dan Zarrella has agreed to answer some questions on either my personal (@omaniblog) and business blog. I'm trying to sort out which 10 questions to ask him.

Paul, thanks for your comment. I agree, I think there is a huge opportunity for people who understand social media to express the impact it can have on one's business.

You bring up a valid point on whether we could do without Facebook when we have LinkedIn and Twitter. A few people have asked that question and I think it goes back to the perception of what Facebook initially started as and where it has to offer now as Yvettee mentioned above. I think that each social media site has its own benefits and contributes something a little different than the other. The question I have is what do you have to lose by not engaging in one particular site over the other?
