Is Christmas really Inbound Marking and Social Media in Action?

According to Wikipedia, Inbound marketing is a style of marketing focused on being found by customers. In contrast to outbound marketing where they "bought their way in".
When I think about the people that I will purchase gifts for I do not go straight to the shops and purchase. I do my research regardless of who I am buying for. This research comes in many forms: checking on Google, asking friends ...........finally looking at the person in question to consider what they need.
So where does outbound marketing come into the equation. Do I wait for flyers to come through the door, or wait for the TV adverts, or look through my spam email or maybe wait for the phone to ring with the telemarketer. It appears that I am like most people that do no longer believe in the corporate marketing adverts. Think back to 2008 when the iPhone advertising was pulled when the Advertising Standards Authority officially chastised Apple over its claims that Internet access on the second-generation 3G iPhone is "really fast," stating that the company needed to pull its advertising pronto.
This trust is element is getting so serious that Google has pledged to support and invest in the Advertising Association's new foundation to rebuild public trust in the UK industry. The initiative, which has the working title ‘Front Foot', was launched by the AA last month following research that found that less than one in six people trust advertisers!
Headline findings from the 4th annual Online Customer Engagement Report show how the presence of companies on social networks has almost doubled from 23% to 44% since last year, and how the use of Twitter to boost customer engagement has gone up five-fold from 7% to 35%.
