Social Media tips from Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett is an American investor, businessman and philanthropist. He is also one of the most successful investors in history. In 2008 he was ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of approximately $62 billion. In 2009, after donating billions of dollars to charity, Buffett was ranked as the second richest man in the United States with a net worth of $40 billion.

So what can we learn from him for social media. Here are some words of wisdom for Warren Buffett.

Learn Internet Marketing

"A public-opinion poll is no substitute for thought."

Just because it is the opinion of the blogger does not mean that it is correct. And if you are going to leave a response make sure that you are adding value to the conversation with your comment. That should be something easy and natural if you comment on blogs that are related to your niche.

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently."

A survey in May 2009 found that 74% of your employees agree that their social media antics could damage your company's reputation. With that in mind, you absolutely need to have the talk with your employees and let them know what they can and cannot do in social media.

Social Media

"It's better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behaviour is better than yours and you'll drift in that direction."

For new users on Twitter, the toughest thing to figure out is who to follow. And since Twitter is a real-time stream of 140-character updates from people whose thoughts and opinions matter to you, the issue of who to follow is what makes Twitter either a time-waster or a useful tool for gathering intelligence.

And finally something to think about that should every aspect of your business and not just social media.

"Your premium brand had better be delivering something special, or it's not going to get the business."
