Is appearing first on Google the best in terms of Inbound Marketing

A similar question was raised in a Linkedin group a few weeks back. The responses were all around a similar theme and process.
First of all you need to have the right keywords:
Choosing the right keyword or search term is a process that can dramatically affect the performance of your inbound marketing efforts and hence it is one that requires proper attention. An important thing to keep in mind is that while getting a high ranking in search engines is important, it is more important to get a high ranking for the right keyword or term.
Secondly you need to convert
Now that you have traffic building and people come to your website through internet and inbound marketing. Are you converting your visitors into leads or paying customers? It's one thing to get traffic coming into your site, but if no one wants to buy or can't find the value to your product or services, your business isn't going to get anywhere.
So remember that while getting the number one rank on Google while generate traffic it really does not account too much unless you can convert them into clients. It is important to follow up with effective call to actions and landing pages that make the most of the traffic generated.
Thirdly it only works in part with social media and engaging
A valid point raised was do you want your business to sit and wait for someone to enter the right keyword or term in Google or should you be proactive and connect with potential clients. Any SEO plan should be done conjunction with an engaging social media approach to have an all encompassing Inbound Marketing strategy.
In summary
While it is great to be one page one and ranked first make sure you follow up with a website that is fresh, relevant, engaging and has the necessary call to actions or landing pages to convert your visitors into leads and long term clients. While at the same time get out and meet some people yourself with social media. Remember organic search in only one part of an effective Inbound Marketing strategy.
