Our Industry does not Need to Blog or Engage in Social Media

How many companies out there feel that they don't need to blog and that social media is definitely not for them? Why? Because that's not the way things are done in their industry. This in fact may be very true; but are you sure?
Let's review the purpose of these two types of new internet marketing strategies that do in fact dominate the web and internet marketing.
Purpose of Blogging
Call it what you like - blogging, news, updates... but essentially all it is, is new content; new content that doesn't scream your products, services, or why you are better than your competitors. It's information about your industry, information you already know; the same conversation you have in a bar with someone. Remember, Google's main purpose is to provide its users with current content. So yes you can post a white paper, you can post a press release, or even an article once a month to your site but I promise you by the time Google gets there, its old news. So if your website is your businesses front door, and you're not writing fresh new content on a regular basis, I'm guessing your store is empty.
Purpose of Social Media
Which brings me to social media - how many different sites are there now? If LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook weren't enough of a time suck, then let's add Google Buzz to the mix! But I'll spare you the complaining and just tell you how it is - writing that great remarkable content is great but how do you expect people to find it? Remember that conversation you had in the bar with the person next to you? Well it's the same thing but instead you are touching a whole lot more people at the same time. So the people on your LinkedIn page may already know what you do, but the people they are connected to don't, so how do you know whether they need your products or services? I can guarantee you there is a social media site out there that has an audience who is interested in your business. My recommendation is that you take the term social media with a grain of salt. Don't think you have to be involved in Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn or any other site. Find the media avenue that works best for you. But either way, find at least one.
All you need to remember is fresh new content being advertised through free tools to get you out on the world-wide web. It's not difficult. You just need to jump in head first.
