The outgoing marketing manager of Unilever sees that the power of marketing lies in Social Media and Inbound Marketing. The marketing chief went as far to say that there is a "lost generation" of brand managers who do not understand the internet or social media. In an interview with the Financial Times he added that public relations were bested placed to profit from the rise of Facebook and Twitter. It really does answer the question can businesses benefit from inbound and social media.
In support for social media and inbound marketing he has seen traditional marketing techniques changed by the internet and that consumers are now empowered by their ability to research and publish their views online. Unilever feel so storing about Social Media and Inbound Marketing that they also encourage their own staff to use social networks sites as Twitter and Facebook. As this helps them understand better however to live and interact in the social media and inbound marketing space.
So will Unilever keep investing in Social Media and Inbound Marketing? While it will not provide any figures on actual money invested online, they have double their digital investment in 2009 and plan to double it again in 2010. However no matter what size of company you are, it appears that all companies still struggle with the idea of ROI on social media. As the outgoing marketing chief of Unilever sees that brands such as Ben & Jerry's ice-cream have run successful campaigns on Facebook he still admits that have "no idea about the value of paid advertising on Facebook at the moment".
