Is Twitter the Vuvuzela of Social Media

vuvuzela social mediaFor anyone watching the World Cup there is plenty of people talking about the Vuvuzela and the noise generated from them. Whether you are watching World Cup 2010 via TV or online it is impossible to miss the very loud sound produced by Vuvuzela. This sound is like million bees flying around our ears. So it is possible that Twitter could be creating the same noise in Social Media?

The main complaint about the noise is the loss of concentration from the players and the commentators. It anyone has done a search is twitter there is always the need to drift through the noise to uncover the true sentiment. Last Sunday night I watched the closing stages of the St Jude Golf Classic where Garrigus was in the lead by 3 shots on the final hole. He had played an awesome final round with a simple par 4 to win. It was at this point I used Tweet deck to follow the sentiment and comments about his playing. However most of the comments on Twitter were not about his playing but his issue with "Swamp Ass" and his extremely short putter. Could this be something similar to the Vuvuzela? Where Twitter can create vast amounts of noise in social media about nothing?

But before you start killing your twitter account this is only one case. I have seen many cases on the flip side that generate interest and relevant discussions in Social Media. My advice is to pick the topics and conversations that you want to participate it and learn to sift out the noise.

What is Inbound MarketingBack to Garrigus and his final hole, he lost his concentration and lost out in a playoff. So do not lose your concentration and stay focused.
