Google EverywhereYesterday AOL and Google renewed a deal on internet search advertising and also expanded it to searching on mobile devices and on the YouTube online video service.  The deal expands the long standing partnership between the two companies.  Google and AOL will still continue to share a percentage of revenue generated by search advertising across AOL’s range of websites.

The new deal agreed between Google and AOL includes AOL contributing video content to YouTube and expands the partnership between the two companies that helped cement Google’s leadership in internet search advertising.   

Google first started providing search advertising services to AOL way back in 2002.  The relationship between Google and AOL has proved vital to AOL, as it is responsible for generating a “significant” portion of its own advertising revenue. 

AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has said previously that the company was examining other search options such as Bing.  In the end, AOL stuck with Google. “After nearly a decade-long partnership in search, we’re looking forward to expanding our global relationship to mobile search and YouTube. All aspects of our partnership will be improved by this deal,” said Armstrong.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the expansion into mobile and video is promising.  There is symmetry to the AOL-Google deal.   Microsoft’s Bing has Yahoo as a search outlet.   And Google has AOL, which is essentially a mirror image of Yahoo in both approach, content and size. The four players represent four of the top five Web properties on the Web and Facebook is the other one.

It appears that Google will try to be everywhere but maybe not mobile, as Steve Jobs  took time from his Apple TV and iPod announcement yesterday to take aim at Google and Android, saying that that Apple was activating 230,000 devices a day, and adding "We think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers."  While he did not come out directly with who he was referring to by not directly naming Android.  But there's no doubt that was his target, especially since he was in the process of announcing the 230,000 device-a-day figure, and Google had recently said it was activating 200,000 devices a day.

But there is no doubt that to be found you need to be friend with Google to succeed online.
