Yikes. It's that time of year again when you start casting around for gift ideas for those hard to please rellies. But it's also freezing cold, so the prospect of traipsing around the shops with numb hands and freezing feet isn't so appealing either. With this in mind, we are voting http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/ the website of the week. It's strapline is 'One basket, hundreds of unique shops', and indeed it is packed full of amazing gifts from independent retailers. It's a very clever concept, and one which relies on the internet to work, gathering products from small retailers up and down the country. Here's some more reasons why we love it:
Zeitgeist
This website successfully captures the spirit of recent campaign to shop local. How can you support independent retailers and still get the spread of products that you would find in a department store? Problem solved!
Quirky
The attractive layout and simple navigation of the website make it immediately engaging. As well as the usual categories such as women, men, teenagers, children, you can search in the 'gifts' section by personality type. Are you an art-lover or an aspirational chef? Style-savvy or a sport lover? It's these kinds of fun touches that give it humour and heart.
The Price Is Right
One of the advantages of high-street shopping is that you can shop cheaply – small, bijou places tend to be on the pricier side. Which makes it all the more pleasing that this site has plenty of lovely gifts at the cheaper end of the spectrum. There is even a search function for products reassuringly priced at £5 or under. Phew.
On Trend
There are so many exciting gifts to choose from and all are beautifully photographed. There's a union jack dog collar for your pooch, vintage cocktail rings for the ladies and even a hand-crafted wooden doll's house for the kids. These products have all been lovingly sought out and selected – which means less tramping around for you on icy afternoons.
So what is your website?
