As 2010 draws to a close,
Google has released its annual Zeitgeist data revealing the top searches of this year. Anyone with even a vague interest in
online marketing will want to get their hands on the most popular search terms in preparation for next year’s
online marketing strategies.
Google revealed that some of the most popular topics searched this year included
iPad,
YouTube and
Facebook - no surprises there. These topics will hugely influence online marketers who may be planning bigger pushes into these platforms in 2011. Interesting side note: people were searching for these popular sites instead of just typing them their names into the address bar.
In response to Google’s revelations, experts have noted how the increasing use of the above
social media sites is changing the way people interact with websites. As well as these, some of the most popular websites users were looking for included
eBay and Google, while video chat room
Chatroulette was among the fastest rising terms.
A Sign of the TimesReflecting the economic climate, many people used Google to find cheap products such as laptops, airline flights and budget holidays. Something to
online marketing and
SEO specialists should take heed off.
The increasing interest in celebrity culture showed no sign of abating according to Google’s latest release. It-girl Kim Kardashian and teen popstar Justin Bieber were among the most searched items on the web, along with Tinidadian born hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj and pop vixen Katy Perry. High-profile celebrity divorces earned their own category this year. Web users searched for information on Cheryl Cole’s, Tiger Woods’ and Eva Longoria’s marital breakdowns. Even Hulk Hogan's three-year-old divorce from Linda Bollea was the subject of intense interest.
