We all know by now what social media is. It’s the coming together of a million minds, hearts, souls, feelings, ideas, talents and every conceivable extension of everything. Social media can make anything social. Social is a funny word if you keep saying it, and it has many connotations.
The best definition for the word social – in one opinion anyway – and in the terms of describing Social Media, the following should just about cover it.
“Social (so shel) Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of the activities of and the relations among human beings living in a community. Or, pertaining to human society and its modes of organization.”
This type of social media makes for a very large community. If there was no such thing, what would we be doing? I suppose if there was no social media there basically wouldn’t be too much internet communication. When you think about the mind boggling amounts of information about anything social, it’s hard to absorb because of the overwhelming amount of ‘subjects’ in involves that are available on the internet. Is it possible that one person could browse to every single website on the internet? Wow, that is one tough question.
In order to bring everyone together under normal circumstances you would want to coordinate an event that all the people concerned were ‘into’ that specific subject. However, with social media, it seems everyone becomes interested in things they had never before thought about. This then, moves them into a different direction, extends the interest in that subject, and invites another person into the said community.
The business side of social media is no different in that it entices curious people into the fold. Advertising media for instance shouts things like SALE! FREE! YOU WIN! Key words that grab folks attention and they click away to see what is free or for sale or more importantly what they might have won. In their expedition to find out these facts they are invited to browse the web site, learn about the people that operate it, who built it, and who is advertising and lets you know someone is available for contact at all times.
Another key word. Contact. And that is what social media is all about.
