Hate to say it but SEO is not a one night stand

Website should be spelt with the letters SEO

Hate to say it but SEO is not a one night standRegardless of the industry you are in, it is likely that you have a website and if you have a business website, it is likely that you have tried various methods to try and promote it. Handled well, a website can become an integral part of any business, a means to find customers, build relations with customer and generate sales. But in order for a website to achieve these kinds of results, it must be built with SEO in mind.

Which comes first SEO or the website

People who are perhaps unfamiliar with SEO think that it is a process that begins once the website is live. In fact, SEO can best benefit the website if it is taken into consideration before work even begins on the website.  SEO should be the website’s building blocks. By identifying the key search terms that drive traffic in a given industry using those terms to direct the content of the site, the site ensures from the outset that it is tapping into the mindset of industry Internet users.

SEO does grow

Helping businesses to establish a web presence is the first rung on the ladder of SEO. From there on it should be used to help the business cement its Internet presence, grow traffic, build customer base and generate sales.  For any business website, one of the most important objective is to achieve a good search engine ranking. Research has proven that most Internet users do not search beyond the first page of results.

But Seo does not sleep

For this reason it is imperative for businesses to aim to be in the top ten results. The only way to achieve this is through SEO. This means continuously running searches on keywords and updating site content so as that it stays relevant.  SEO is not a one-off solution but an on-going process that can drive a business’s performance online.

Which comes first SEO or the website?

In an ideal world what would come first is plenty of requirements gathering and strategic planning - finding out what the goals of the site are and how best to set about achieving them. Finding out how the business works, examining how their website can increase efficiencies - integrated/automated business processes, data analysis, systems integration - will assist in creating an online presence that is both targeted and effective.

That comes before any SEO or design simply because that exercise defines the parameters within which SEO & design/development need to work. How can you perform adequate SEO without setting relevant business goals? How can you design and develop the information flow and conversion funnels without knowing the order of priorities?

Driving traffic to the site with SEO is pointless if the architecture of the site sucks and the content structure is irrelevant to what the user is looking for, just as building a site with a cohesive structure and great content is pointless if no one can find it.

SEO is important, but it's still only one cog in a process. Of course, along with every other part of the site - design, content, CRM, business processes and intelligence - it should be under regular review, subject to reporting and analysis.
