Facebook is a marketing hub

Facebook marketing designed by Abercombie & FitchThe great thing about Facebook is that it is both global and local in its communication. Never before have the principles of direct marketing been so applicable and measurable.  Facebook allows companies to build up communities of customers around their Facebook pages, customers who want to communicate with the company, customers who will happily push the products to friends and family and customers who expect very little in return for their efforts.

Facebook is word of mouth online

For almost a century, marketing experts have said that the strongest promotional tool any business has at its disposal is word of mouth. Facebook makes word of mouth possible. But there are a few things companies must do to ensure this happens.  Firstly if the product is available in a number of different countries, ensure that a Facebook fan page exists in the language of the host page. This should be an absolute starting point for companies that operate internationally.

Facebook is outside your company

Expecting customers in China or Germany to pick up on English posts, even though they might speak great English, dilutes the company’s link with those customers.  Get the conversation going with interesting posts, video and links. For the most part a lot of this conversation will happen outside the control of the company and that is fine, in fact, the company should encourage that.

Facebook about respect

By the same token, the company should also be involved and lay down some ground rules for that conversation. As an example of this, take a look at the Facebook page for Abercombie & Fitch. While their guidelines encourages Facebook fans to have fun, they also ask that they respect the page and each other.   The company should never shy away from getting involved in that conversation either. Judge the tone of the posts being posted by fans and make sure to maintain that tone. Where questions are asked, make sure to respond. The key here is to keep all conversations going and start new ones as part of an on-going process.
