Online is different
The Internet makes writers of us all. The Internet’s appetite for content is never ending, it devours copy in seconds and continuously demands new and fresh updates. That is the genius of Facebook. Its creators created a site where the users of the site manage the content, which totally alleviates the creators of that responsibility. If you have no idea how to write for online media, spend some time on Facebook to get some ideas.
Online is fast, snappy and direct
This is the new wave of Internet communications. It’s fast, snappy, direct and two-way. As opposed to ten years ago, when design bureaus would spend months working on a brochure, perfecting the copy, today’s online writers must produce copy in minutes and have it circulating the Internet by the end of the day.
The internet has changed business
To really grasp how the Internet has changed styles of business writing, it’s best to look at the media where that copy is directed. There are various online platforms that demand different styles of writing. Most companies will have a website and depending on whether the site is a static brochure site or an e-commerce site will determine the pitch of the copy. However, in each case, it is likely to be the case that less is more. Internet readers like photos and videos. As a rule they don’t like text. Make your sentences short. Get straight to the point.
Maybe start with a blog
Another kind of popular online writing is a blog. There are those written by trade industry journals or experts and those produced in-house by specific companies. Internet users read both but again here, the trick is to keep the tone light. Keep blog entries short. Internet users want info but not to waste time. This is the key characteristic of most online writing be it on Facebook or Twitter, on LinkedIn or in chat rooms.
