Reach first on how to write online

How to write like a Online Media GuruWhen a young aspiring writer wants to learn how to write novels, short stories or poems, she must make it her business to read as many novels, short stories and poems as she can in order to understand the conventions of language that apply to those forms.  Online media is no different. The best way to understand how to write for online media is to spend time researching the various online media platforms.

Blog your first step forward

The best place to start is with blogs. Really every business that wants to begin to expand its online presence should begin that process with a blog. Why? Because blogs are easy to set up, current and easy to manage. That said they do require a time commitment but when managed well, they pay off quickly.  The Internet is awash with blogs; there are hundreds of thousands out there. So how do you make your blog stand out?

Where do the cool blogs hang out?

The first thing to do is check out some other blogs. If you go to a mainstream media site like Time Magazine or another newspaper, you will find a selection of blogs. The media tend to latch onto the best of the blogs out there and push them.  A good blog will have a simple layout, lots of photos, easy to read text and be continuously updated. There is nothing worse that clicking onto a blog and seeing that it hasn’t been updated since March 2006. That is the fastest way to lose viewers.

Blogging means getting to the point

Take time to read these blogs. They all have one thing in common. The language. Even a brief glance will demonstrate that blog writers use a personable style of writing and treat their readers like close friends.  They assume that the readers want to know the information that they are writing about and do not waste time qualifying that information. They get straight to the point and keep the points light-hearted but engaging.  And in a very short time your will become that online media guru.
