These days it is common to find Internet access as a standard feature of most homes alongside television, radio and other traditional media platforms.  The Internet impacts on people’s lives in different ways but no one escapes its reach. It is estimated that women spend more time online than men, average 25 hours a month while generation Y, the 18 to 29 year olds spend on average 19 hours a week. Generation X follows closely behind with 17 hours a week.

So what are those users using the Internet for?

Almost 50 percent of Internet users in the UK and the US use the Web to get updates on Entertainment News. Celeb news is also a popular search in countries as diverse as Vietnam, Ireland, Poland and Canada.  It is estimated worldwide Internet users spend 4.6 hours a week on social media while they spend 4.4 hours using email. According to one study, 48 percent of online users are reading content while up to 49 percent are reading and writing emails.

Is online always about online purchases?

The integration of the Internet into people’s everyday lives means that people are open to new ways that it can improve their lives. Up until February 2010 up to 15 percent of online users has used the Internet to purchase movie tickets, music, games and magazines.  However, up to 60 percent said that moving forward they would definitely consider using the Internet for online purchases whilst also expanding their level of Internet use into social media, blogs and podcasts.

This willingness to further increase the use of the Internet exists across the board.
