In 10 years online has changed
Whereas ten years ago, online activity was the sole preserve of business users, today’s online users have integrated the Net into a whole range of personal uses especially in the area of video, audio and radio. You Tube is one of the great success stories of modern Internet uses so much so that it is estimated that 35 hours of video are updated to You Tube every minute.
Seems everyone is on You Tube
The camcorder, digital mobile recorders and advanced cameras makes auteurs of us all and You Tube serves many users in the way that blog sites like blogspot and wordpress serve bloggers. More and more people are choosing to record special moments in video and post those videos online to share with family and friends. It is estimated that 72 percent of You Tube users share videos with at least 3 people and 11 percent with 6 or more.
Every business is affected
The music industry too has changed beyond recognition directly because of the way people access and use music online. Today almost 12 billion songs have been downloaded from iTunes worldwide and there are more than 160 million iTunes account in 23 countries. The digital music business is now estimated to be worth $3.7 billion and in 2011, digital platforms accounted for more than 33 percent of total music industry sales. The US is still the biggest market for music downloads but other countries are catching on fast.
Even traditional media has to change
Radio, like newspapers, is an area where there is set to be a lot of change in the coming years. To date, only a small percentage of users use the Net to listen to radio be the increased mobility of Net devices is poised to change that trend. Expect the consumption of video, audio and radio to continue to drive key changes in the use of online services in the coming years.
