Hello who is not tweeting?
Unless you fell to planet earth yesterday in a random meteorite storm, there ain’t no way you are not going to know about Twitter. With about 200 million registered users worldwide, Twitter is one of the success stories of the Web 2.0 era. In terms of popular Twitter accounts, those that dominate traditional media platforms tend to have the market cornered on tweeting too. At the top of the table are names like Oprah, E! Online, New York Times and The Onion.
Everyone is tweeting
Although other celebrity accounts are well known and heavily followed, an example being Kim Kardashian or Stephen Fry and do we need to mention the “Winning” Charlie Sheen, the real fun of Twitter lies in the control it gives users. People can set up accounts and tweet like the famous, send links to friends or tell the world their news.
Lots of people searching in Twitter land
All this tweeting generates a far amount of online activity. There are an estimated 90 million tweets a day, 90 percent of which are open to public viewing and 25 percent of which contain links. Although 75 percent of Twitter traffic is generated outside Twitter, it would be foolhardy to overlook the amount of activity on Twitter. There are an estimated 600 million queries a day on Twitter’s search engine which is more than Yahoo! gets. There are in the region of 70,000 apps using Twitter’s API.
And the Twitters are going mobile
The rise of the smartphone has played a huge role in the popularity of Twitter with 46 percent of users accessing the Twitter account via mobile phone. To date, 65 percent of businesses have Twitter accounts which is good because companies can no longer afford to ignore the power of Twitter users. The average Twitter user is said to have significant influence over a brand’s online reputation as it is in the nature of Twitter users to not just tweet, but also share, post links, videos, articles and blogs.
