Linkedin is special

Linkedin for MarketingCompared with some other social media sites, LinkedIn has steered clear of the hyperbole and media hype associated with some other networks. But its lower profile goes with its purpose.  That’s not to say that if you are thinking of signing up to social media sites, you can afford to overlook LinkedIn. On the contrary, if you are in business, you need to be LinkedIn.

Linkedin is growing

LinkedIn is specially designed to cater for professionals and gives those professionals a global platform on which to announce their skills and sell their services. And many professionals are doing just that.  There are currently around 100 million LinkedIn users worldwide and about 15 million of those are in Europe. In the UK alone, there are approximately 4 million users. In fact, a new member joins LinkedIn every second.

Linkedin is also a place to find people

LinkedIn’s exclusively business profile means that its database of members includes executives from all Fortune 500 companies.  The site offers a rich source of employment opportunities for members also. While 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies hire through LinkedIn, 25 percent of FTSE 100 companies do so.  Much like Facebook, LinkedIn works on an invitation basis and in order for one user to build their connections throughout the site, they must either be invited to connect to another user or they must know that user.

The more connections that a user acquires, the more users he or she can potentially connect to. As people working within a given sector always invariably know each other, connections can build up quickly, spreading throughout that industry.  While the average user has up to 500 connections, it’s easy to see how quickly a network of customers and/or key industry contacts can be built up using LinkedIn by targeting people in key sectors. The savvy LinkedIn user uses these connects to promote their services and win business.
