Everyone has a blog for marketing have you?

Why blogging should be your next resource for marketingEverybody’s blogging. So much so that the exact number of blogs worldwide isn’t known but without question it soars into the millions.  As for the topics that people choose to blog about, well, they are almost as varied. A recent Technorati report showed that some of the main influencers for blog topics included television shows, social media, podcasts, other blogs and conversations with family.

Blog content comes from people

News sites like The Drudge Report and The Huffington Post are also key sources of inspiration for bloggers. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, conversations with friends tops all other influencers with 71 percent of part-time bloggers saying that chit chat with their mates inspired their blog content.  However, that’s not to say that those factors are the primary reasons for bloggers to create blogs. In a further study, Technorati identified that when asked to state the prime influence on their blogs, up to 30 percent of part-time bloggers and 40 percent of self-employed bloggers said ‘other.’

Blog content can and should vary

These points highlight two key aspects about blogs: the diversity of blogs makes them difficult to qualify and a large percentage of bloggers are uses their blogs to promote business and services.  In fact, business plays a key role in blogging activities. In the same report 42 percent of bloggers confirm that they blog about brands that they love or hate. While some blog about their firsthand experiences of products, others blog about company information or gossip.

Is blogging an untouched resource?

A significant percentage, almost 50 percent of part-time bloggers post product or brand reviews. This use of blogs to promote or review a brand’s performance or perception is becoming more widespread and companies are seeking ways to harness the activity as a way to influence brand perceptions.  However, there is still some way to go for companies wishing to harness the world of blogging. 71 percent of bloggers confirm that they only blog about brands they approve of while 64 percent of bloggers feel that companies treat them less professionally than other media sources.
