While many small businesses may just be beginning to feel comfortable with the term Web 2.0, the IT world has moved on and is already gearing up for the next generation of the Internet, namely Web 3.0. The basic premise of the Web 3.0 generation is that Internet use will be based on ‘intelligent’ web applications that use natural language processing, artificial intelligence and intelligent applications.
Social Media pushing Web 3.0
There are two dominant forces which are driving the evolution of Web 3.0. The first has evolved through social network sites by allowing users to tailor their online experiences through social bookmarking. This means that they are using sites which are more relevant and of a higher quality as they have been recommended through their social network.
And smartphones also pushing web 3.0
The second factor driving this evolution is the phenomenal growth of the mobile market, which now sees the vast majority of users access their online accounts through mobile units including laptops, tablets and smartphones.
As the name suggests, the aim of Web 3.0 is to provide solutions for all the problems that Web 2.0 has not been able to. For example, one of the aims of Web 3.0 is ‘openness.’ With Web 2.0 security has become a serious issue with users continuously concerned for their safety of their online identity.
Web 3.0 aims to rectify this problem by opening application programming interfaces, protocols, data formats and open source software platforms. Users will have an Open ID or have a roaming portable identity. Part of this development will be the increased use of online avatars. By opening up the access to information, Web 3.0 also broadens the options where applications can run meaning that any app will have the ability to run on any device.
Web 3.0 is about openness
Web 3.0 will effectively turn the entire Internet into one large database which users can roam with unlimited flexibility. It is the first step towards creating a truly driven data world.
