According to a recent Comscore report, there are now more than 26 billion searches each month on the Internet.  This figure confirms what all online marketers know today, namely that if an organisation is visible on a search engine, the opportunities for promoting the organisation’s brand are limitless.  Despite the huge opportunities that strategic online marketing presents, it is estimated that up to 40 percent of marketers waste time on low impact activities.

This high percentage can be based on measurement systems which are inherently flawed, that have evolved in response to problems rather than as a way to drive campaigns.  However, according to Conductor, a leading specialist in SEO technology, all that is about to change. The size of the Internet market is so big, the opportunities too great and the function has become so essential, that it is simply too impossible to ignore its importance any longer.

This change is being spearheaded by a shift in attitude towards SEO technology. Whereas it was previously seen as the terrain of IT specialists, these days SEO is regarded as an essential part of any online marketing strategy and something that marketers must integrate into daily activities.  In a SEO Trends Survey carried out by Conductor and Econsultancy, it was identified that up 78 percent of marketers now see SEO metrics as a more important influence on strategy than they were two years ago.

Despite the importance placed on SEO metrics many organisations have not caught up with the technology. In the same survey, 43 percent of respondents did not track online conversion rates while 44 percent did not measure return on investment.  That said 62 percent of marketers now place SEO metrics and tracking the long term impact of page changes as a top goal. Marketers are also working towards combining SEO with business metrics and generating SEO metrics that are meaningful to others in the organisation.
