In the survey, the UK’s top online marketing companies were asked some questions regarding their use of marketing forms like SEO, PPC, Blogging and Social Media. Questions such as which they found the most effective, which was their chief focus this year, and why they are using it with what objectives were asked of these marketing companies.

So why are online marketing organisations using social media in 2011? Most companies stated that increased brand awareness and enhanced reputation is their most important objective for carrying out social media marketing in 2011. Just over half of company and agency respondents (51%) have deemed this to be the top goal of using social media.

Among the chief goals are improved customer service and satisfaction (which ranked higher than in SEO and PPC), which 34% of companies saying that it’s among the top two goals for this kind of marketing. This is a significant rise in companies saying that social media marketing is primarily aimed at improving customer service and satisfaction. More agencies than in 2010 are also saying that social media marketing has become about generating leads.

So what do these figures really say to us? Companies and users are really embracing the social media fold as a medium to greatly improve both their brand awareness AND their customer service and interaction. Since those surveyed are ranking social media higher than SEO and PPC for customer service and satisfaction, it is a real acknowledgement of the power of the various social media platforms to connect with users on a personal level. Organisations are also recognizing that social media can connect and generate leads from users in a more focused or targeted way than PPC or SEO.
