Now That The Pope Is On Twitter, Can You Afford Not To Be?

Social media circles are buzzing with the news that the man closest to God has taken up accounts with twitter and Facebook. The Irish Times, the Sun, and Gizmodo among others have all reported that the Vatican has moved into the social media space with new Facebook accounts and Twitter profiles. If you want to tweet the pope, all you have to do is check out @news_va_en on Twitter to contact them – you could be waiting for a response for some time, however, as the Vatican have posted on their sparkly new Facebook page that they were not expecting such a great response to their new pages. They have asked for patience, as they don’t have the resources to get through all of their new comments and messages. Right now, you won’t be able to DM the pope directly – but in months to come, who knows?

You can also check out a new video which is going viral on the Vatican news website and YouTube – the pope sends his first tweet from an iPad!

The new Vatican news website is primed for social media engagement and takes advantage of streaming technology to livecast Vatican events, and will be posting out homilies, statements and speeches. The question we are asking is: if the Pope can engage on social media, can’t you? With social networks and twitter springing up business pages and accounts, and organizations are already feeling the benefits of increased user engagement through these platforms.

The one lesson to be learned from this? Make sure when you implement your social media strategy you have the resources to engage with your users! As the Vatican have learned, a great social media campaign can have a big response which is a positive thing – but make sure you have the resources to engage back with your users to feel the full benefits of social media.
