The Google SEO Evolution: Are You Keeping Up?
Posted by Patrick Murphy on Thu, Jul 21, 2011
SEO is a bit of an art form.. and with all the recent changes, it can be difficult to keep your eye on the ball. The rules can change just as soon as you think you have it down. Last year, Google places were all the rage. Then we had Google +1 buttons (still a bit of a mystery) and Google Panda, the SEO algorithm revamp. All the experts agree that it’s more important than ever to keep up with Google and it’s changes. And what is the top priority now? What can we focus on, rely on to help us with SEO? The answer is original content. Content creation is more important than ever.
SEO Algorithms Are Intelligent
Google uses an intelligent algorithm to weed out copied content and plagiarism. If your content is a copy/paste job, and doesn’t contain original copy then Google is going to know, and it will affect your search engine rankings. Google Panda is the project that has helped weed out “content farms”, which are websites, that purely duplicate content- sometimes so badly that it isn’t readable. This is because Google believes that duplicated content isn’t conducive to a good user experience.
Content Farms Belong Back In The 2000’s
Experts are warning that even SME’s who aren’t necessarily out to content farm can be impacted by these algorithm changes – if your content is copied from any other source, you can expect your search rankings to be impacted. So what can you do to avoid this happening? First thing, if you are using duplicated content then stop. To cope with Google Panda, it’s time to up your “publishing” game. While it may not be the first choice for SME’s, resources have to go into creating in house original content – if this isn’t possible (and it’s not for most small businesses), then outsourcing is the answer. Look for experienced bloggers and content writers to help you create content for your own website.
Great original content will offer the user something they haven’t thought of before – and if that happens, they will also share it among social networks and friends. When this happens, your search rankings will be further improved.
