Getting started in social media isn’t like learning to ride a bike. There are a number of steps you can take in the planning stages to make everything run more smoothly. Before you start into social media marketing, stop worrying about all the buzzwords and tools, because none of them last. Tools change from year to year, and platforms change year to year. To keep a continuous social media strategy, you have to fully understand the nature of social media. Then you can apply your strategy to any platform you with.
Our social media planning tips:
Get your pitch in order. What’s your slogan? Can you describe your company in 140 characters or less? Make it snappy.
What’s the point of it? Do you want to increase brand awareness, sales or customer service? Pick one to focus on from the outset.
Monitor the relationship you have with your audience. What does your audience know about you? Do they know anything at all? Are they aware of your company, but have never acted on it? Perhaps they have interacted with your company once, or even they are enthusiasts. Pick a couple of these groups, but make sure they are similar and target them.
Monitor your target audience’s use of social media. Use Forrester tools and other free tools; get to understand your audience’s use of social media. So if your target is older, you may find they’re not very inclined to enter into a video-making competition.
Pick a social media coordinator with a human personality. Not everyone is suited to the social media domain. If you are part of a big company, it can be difficult to shed the corporate feel, so you will need a great personality behind the social media. It’s all about personality.
