The Facebook Battlefield: Getting Your Business Started

facebook battlefieldSometimes businesses don’t know where to start when moving into the social media realm. Don’t worry, SiliconCloud is here to help! Depending on your inbound marketing strategy, you may choose to make a Facebook page a part of your online campaign. Setting up a Facebook page for your business isn’t too hard if you follow our quick guide.

The first thing to know about delving into social media via Facebook is the difference between a Facebook Page and a Facebook Profile. If you have a Facebook profile, then you’re already familiar with it’s layout and it’s privacy settings etc. Very often, a business will choose to set up a Facebook Profile instead of a page. This is definitely the wrong approach, and if Facebook finds a business using a profile instead of a page then they will usually suspend it. It’s vital to get off on the right food with Facebook so when setting a page up for a business or an organization, always choose to set up a “Page”.

What are the crucial differences between the Facebook Profile and Facebook Page, and why do they matter? Let’s look a little deeper. Facebook profiles have the following characteristics:

  • A personal profile is limited to 5000 Facebook “friends”

  • When someone adds you as a friend on a personal profile, it can be extremely time consuming. Some brands on Facebook can have hundreds of thousands of fans, and some even have millions. Do you have time to approve them all?

  • Using a profile instead of a business page on Facebook is against the Facebook terms of service

  • Facebook profiles are designed to cater for individuals and their digital lives, not businesses

Facebook Pages:

  • Pages can have an unlimited number of fans, or as they call it these days, “likes”

  • New likes are automatically accepted.. no need to sit on Facebook 24/7 approving likes

  • Facebook pages come with powerful marketing tools built in, and analytics for the page

  • Facebook pages can be the home of a business, organization, charity, celebrity or brand on Facebook

These are just some of the stark differences between Facebook pages and Profiles. Check back soon for our follow up blog on setting up a Facebook page.
