Steve Jobs: A Key Figure In The Social Media Evolution
Posted by Patrick Murphy on Fri, Oct 07, 2011
When we think of Steve Jobs, we think of the creator of popular products like the iPod, iPhone, Mac, iPad and the operating system OS X. But when we delve a little deeper, we realized that achieving the creation of these things wasn’t enough: Steve also influenced countless other evolutions in media and society. Let’s not forget Steve Jobs was instrumental in the success of Pixar, which opened up an entire new genre and entered the next phase of animation and family entertainment.
When we consider social media, most of us will think of Mark Zuckerberg and his peers. Mark created Facebook from his college dorm room, and this social network now dominates the world. So most of us will credit the likes of Zuckerberg for the evolution in the way the world communicates and shares information. But would Facebook and the likes of YouTube, LinkedIn and Foursquare be of any success without the technologies that have supported them and their spread? The answer is no.
Without the evolution of the Mac, iPhone and iPad, social media would not have gone mobile and become integral to daily life for millions of people. By creating the iPhone, Steve Jobs set the bar high with a device that was ahead of its time. Access to mobile apps meant that users could use social media on the go, and created motivation among competitors to follow suit with making the web more mobile.
We’d like to say thanks to Steve Jobs for fuelling the social media evolution with his clever and beautiful technology. Some of Steve’s final work went into the creation of iOS5, due for release next week. This new operating system will be again more social media friendly, because Steve could see the future before the rest of us. He knew that the public would begin to demand more social media friendly products as the social media universe expands. Just one more example of how Steve Jobs could see the future of technology before the rest of us.
