Social Media: How To Avoid Wasting Time

Social Media How To Avoid Wasting TimeWe hear a lot of people wondering how much time should be devoted to the social media aspect of their marketing. There are so many theories: one hour a day is all you need, social media is a full time job, fifteen minutes every hour, and so on. There are some gimmick strategies that would require a master multitasker to carry them out successfully.

Hubspot offers a free eBook on how to monitor social media in 10 minutes a day, and there are similar eBooks out there depending on what your style is. Monitoring for at least one hour a day may be the most reasonable approach for companies. Spending 8 hours a day on social media may be what some companies do, but is it really effective? Some will spend less and reap more rewards.

The truth is, social media needs vary from company to company and industry to industry. There is no “one size fits all” answer. So how are you going to manage your social media efforts in the most time efficient way? Check out the following 3 tips to get started:

  1. Social media is an open forum for networking. Building relationships is paramount, but you can’t build a great relationship with everybody. It’s like going to a big conference. You can meet a group of really interesting people, but the majority of people you won’t get to know in depth. So don’t head out into the social media realm looking to build a relationship with everybody. It’s not going to happen.
  2. What are you doing with your 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours a day? The key point of this time, however small, is to promote your content. And for this reason, content has to be great. Content is what adds value to your social media offering. It keeps users coming back. Reuse content in your efforts. Mix it up and take quotes from old content if you want. This helps to save time but still provide value to the social media user.
  3. If time is an issue, don’t bother setting up profiles on 10 different platforms. Focus on making a presence on just two or three instead. A mediocre effort across the board will bring no benefits.
