Learning to Listen in 2012: Part Two

Learning to Listen in 2012 Part TwoYesterday we discussed the importance of the listening strategy with social media. We know that it’s a vital part of social analytics and the overall marketing strategy, and it’s the best way to keep the marketing strategy relevant and productive. We now know that we have to first find our audience out there on the social media plains, and that they’re not always where we would expect. For example, young teenagers are less on Twitter and Facebook, and are more often found on MySpace. Company CEO’s are more often found on LinkedIn.

Social media influencers

We also learned about influencers: these are the influential minority out there in social media. They have lots of followers that are eager to listen, and are more likely to share content and links than the majority of users. 1% of your social media audience are those who will generate 20% of the traffic... with 6% generating 80% of your social media traffic. Isn’t that an interesting statistic?

Analyzing and identifying keywords

Today we’re looking at identifying the effective keywords and trends for your market. Social media monitoring tools can help with this. We need to figure out the topics and keywords that are relevant and important to your business… when we know that, we can listen out for these and figure out what kind of language the target audience is interested in. It can be as simple as using a less formal or more formal derivative of a word... but this can only be determined by listening. The first thing to do is to search based on your SEO keywords. They form a great base to get started.

What’s the overall strategy?

An organization’s social media strategy should address the overall plan, and should be built using the knowledge gained through social listening. Social media monitoring should form the foundation of this strategy. Without social media monitoring, you’re going to end up broadcasting to a deaf audience!
