Social Media Will Be The Victor At Super Bowl XLVI

Social Media Will Be The Victor At Super Bowl XLVIThis Sunday, The NY Giants and the New England Patriots will be battling for victory in the 46th Superbowl. People are hedging their bets on the winners as we speak, but there’s one potential winner that has been overlooked: social media. The marketers who use these social media platforms to their best advantage are poised to win in a big way on Sunday night. Last year, fans engaged with the game at an all-new level. Social media now plays a huge role in the way we engage with traditional media like TV, and sports coverage.

Here are some interesting stats:

  • Twitter nearly exploded during last year’s Superbowl. The record for most sports-related posts was broken a total of six times by the end of the game, with 4,064 tweets every second.
  • Last year’s Super Bowl generated over 4.5 million tweets in the space of just six hours.
  • The Super Bowl adverts from 2011 have been viewed over 360 million times on the web. That’s a lot of exposure!
  • In the US, Twitter traffic exploded on game day. It went up by over 50%!
  • When you pick out the fans of the Super Bowl on social media, you find that 61% of them updated their status during the game. 28% of fans chatted on social media platforms during the game.

We need to look at this logically: we know that most people can’t afford the $111,000 per second on air advertising during Super Bowl breaks. But this social media activity provides ample opportunity for marketing in this space. So how about coming up with some strategies to target fan’s social media presence instead? Commercials made for YouTube could spread virally, and brand pages that focus on Super Bowl related content and updates throughout the game could be a winner. How about a points per player promotion on your Facebook page, or on your Twitter feed?
