The first month of 2012 was an interesting one in the world of social media. Facebook’s IPO sent stocks in the technology sector soaring, Timeline became mandatory for all users, Pinterest broke into the mainstream, and sent marketers scrambling to develop strategies for the platform. In addition, Google updated their privacy policies, causing a certain amount of concern among users. The SOPA privacy laws were also dropped after many Internet communities staged a “protest” of sorts, taking their sites offline for one day.

- On New Year’s Eve, Twitter users beckoned 2012 with over 16,000 tweets per second. That’s double the amount of tweets from last year.
- Over 49,000,000 people in America alone visited Google+.
- Wikipedia went offline in January for the first time in it’s existence to protest against SOPA privacy laws.
- Who could forget the McDonalds marketing disaster, after they launched the hashtags #meetthefarmers and #McDStores in promoted tweets.
- There are over 15 million users on Instagram, the photo sharing application. And now, President Obama is one of them. He really knows how to target the younger generations!
- Nearly 20% of all Facebook users are now located in the United States.
- The most shared picture on Google+.
- 28% of adults will use Internet search engines, while 3% will get news about businesses from social media.
- Coldplay now have a following of 618,356 followers on Google+.
